Navy detachment wins Sloan award

The U.S. Navy’s Personnel Support Detachment Afloat West (PSD Afloat West), directed by Lt. Robert Liberato, U.S. Navy, has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility.

“I am very proud and honored to be a recipient of the Sloan Award. This award is testament to the flexibility of the command in both supporting the ships operating in San Diego and supporting our Sailors,” Liberato said. “What makes this award unique is that after submitting appropriate input, an anonymous employee survey was done to see whether the command actually does what it says it does. We were then compared to other commands and businesses across the country.”

Liberato is responsible for the pay and personnel for more than 50 ships and 16,000 Navy personnel homeported in San Diego and deployed throughout the Navy.

As a recipient of the 2011 Sloan Award, PSD Afloat West ranks in the top 20 percent of employers nationally in terms of its programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace.

Lt. Liberato is the son of Rodney and April Liberato of Hilo.
