Vulcans golfer opens
with 70 at Turtle Bay

University of Hawaii at Hilo golfer Travis Russell fired a 2-under 70 on Wednesday at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu and was five strokes off the pace after the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate.

For the second consecutive tournament, UHH was competing mostly against Division I competition. One of only two Division II schools in the 18-team tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii-Manoa, the Vulcans (8-over 296) were 13th.

UHH freshman Dalen Yamauchi competed as an individual and shot 72.

Duke’s Julian Suri (65) led by a shot, while California (270) led the team race by four strokes.

Saturday at Civic

Unorthodox Industries Championship will hold a mixed martial arts card at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hilo Civic, featuring “Rootless” Daniel Friend vs. Ian Dela Cuesta in the main event.

In a semi-main event bout, Miles Campbell will fight Nue Kahele. In another, John Kaiya will take on Eddie Rodrigues.

In Round One: Life of a Fighter Tournament, Reed Akashi will face Jayson Dumaoal, and Justin Cook will battle Conrado Martin.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Cageside seats are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets available at CD Wizard, Big Island Surf, C Thru Glass Tinting, and Hilo Fight Company.

UIC promoter Russell Strong said it’s the first time anyone in Hawaii is charging $10 for a MMA event. His last event in October the tickets were $20 in advance.

Big Island Auto Club
revs up this weekend

The Big Island Auto Club will be holding its season-opening races Saturday and Sunday at Hilo Drag Strip.

Saturday’s races include pro gas, pro bike and junior dragsters. Sunday’s events include bracket racing, bracket bikes, sports compact and junior drags.

Gates open at 8 a.m. both days.

Admission for adults is $7, $1 for kids ages 6-12.
