University of Hawaii at Hilo sophomore golfer Travis Russell handled the windy conditions better than most Thursday, carding a 3-under 69 to move up the leaderboard at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu.
Playing in gusts that reached 30 mph on the back nine, Russell was four shots off the lead and in a three-way tie for sixth at 5-under.
“The wind didn’t seem to bother him,” UHH coach Earl Tamiya said. “A bad start, but he recovered. When he made bogeys, he recovered.”
Southern Methodist’s Sam Fidone (67) carded the low round of the day to take a share of the lead with first-round leader Julian Suri of Duke at 135. Suri shot a 70.
The Division II Vulcans (13-over 589) moved up two spots into a tie for 11th in a field that includes 16 Division I schools.
UHH freshman Daylen Yamauchi carded his second consecutive 72, but his scores don’t count toward his team’s total. The Waiakea graduate failed to gain a spot on the Vulcans’ five-man scoring team during practice.
“That was a bad pick,” Tamiya joked. “But he didn’t qualify.
“He had some rough times (in the fall), but it was just a matter of time until he came around and now he’s really starting to blossom.”
Blake Snyder (73) was next for UHH at 5-over. The Vulcans’ Nick Matsushima and the University of Hawaii’s Nainoa Calip, a Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate, each carded 73s and were at 150.
