Youth Orchestra from Norway to perform

With great joy, the congregation of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ in Honomu announces the installation of the Rev. Linda Petrucelli as the church’s settled pastor and teacher at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the church. The event is open to all. Light refreshments will be served following the service.
“This church has been serving the people of the Hilo/Hamakua Coast in Honomu since 1894,” says church council moderator Eleanor Pernell. “We are very excited to continue our ministry under Pastor Linda’s leadership and encourage everyone in the area to visit us.”
The Rev. Petrucelli, along with husband Gary Hoff, has called Hawaii Island home for 12 years. For nine years, they served as missionaries in Taiwan. The Rev. Petrucelli also served as executve for Global Sharing with the United Church Board for World Ministries from 1993 to 2000. Since settling in Hawaii, the Rev. Petrucelli has worked with several congregations as pastor as well as with the United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries office following the 2000 flooding and 2006 earthquake on the island.
She holds a Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary.

Musica Sinfonietta of Norway, on a Hawaii Island tour, is performing at the Honokaa People’s Theatre at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27. Also during the day, Gary Washburn, Honokaa High and Intermediate bandmaster, will bring 90-100 students to interact with the youth orchestra so there is an opportunity to learn about the group and their home country of Norway.
Musica Sinfonietta, the Asker Children and Youth Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Stoyanov, will present this fundraising concert for the Honokaa High School music program for $5 for students and seniors, $7 general at the door.
The Big Island concert tour will feature the orchestral masterpiece “Norwegian Dance No. 2” by Edward Grieg.
In collaboration with UH-Hilo’s Kapili Choir, Musica Sinfonietta will also perform sacred Western European masterworks: Charpentier’s “Te Deum,” an 11-movement French Baroque cantata for chorus and orchestra; Schubert’s “Mass in G”; and Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from the oratorio “Messiah.”
Musica Sinfonietta musicians, ages 12-18, play string, wind and percussion instruments. The group was founded in 1964 and most of the musicians have trained at the Asker kulturskole (School of Music and Performing Arts). Their visit to Hawaii will include contact with Waiakea, Kamehameha, and Kealakehe high schools, and a special afternoon educational event is planned with Gary Washburn’s music students from Honoka’a High.
Conductor Stoyanov has a master’s degree from the Norwegian Academy of Music in addition to education from the conservatory in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the Barrat Due Institute of Music in Oslo, Norway. He has participated in the Jehudi Menuhin Academy in France and has won violin competitions. Musica Sinfonietta has given concerts in and outside Norway, including in Copenhagen and Stockholm, for the celebration of the sixth birthday of H.R.H. Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
