Diver is saved after 10 hours
WAIALUA, Oahu (AP) — Coast Guard officials rescued a scuba diver Monday who was lost at sea off Oahu for nearly 10 hours.
The 45-year-old man was diving Sunday with a group of friends about a mile off Kaena Point, the westernmost tip of Oahu. Friends reported him missing around 3:30 p.m. after he failed to resurface as scheduled.
The Coast Guard calculated the man’s probable location using a computer program, then launched a search by boat and helicopter with the Honolulu Fire Department.
The helicopter found him after he used his dive flashlight to flag down rescuers, officials said. A rescue swimmer dropped into the water and stayed with the diver until a Coast Guard cutter arrived at 1:05 a.m. to pick him up. The Coast Guard said the man appeared to be in good health.
Bill seeks to ease citizenship
PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) — American Samoa’s nonvoting delegate in Congress wants to make it easier for those living in the territory to become U.S. citizens.
Delegate Eni Faleomavaega this week introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to waive certain requirements for U.S. nationals living in American Samoa to become naturalized citizens. Those born in the territory are considered nationals and must follow the same procedures for naturalization as those who are permanent legal residents.
Faleomavaega says it doesn’t make sense to test those wanting to be citizens on English and U.S. history when American Samoa’s public school system is the same as anywhere else in the United States.Applying for citizenship also requires living in the United States for three months. The bill would allow applying for naturalization directly from American Samoa.
Giugni tapped for House seat
HONOLULU (AP) — Gov. Neil Abercrombie has appointed film producer Heather Giugni to the state House of Representatives.
Giugni will represent Aiea and Halawa, filling the seat recently vacated by former Rep. Tom Okamura.
