42 arrested for drunken driving

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.

During the week of Feb. 13-19, Big Island police arrested 42 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 202 DUI arrests compared with 194 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 18; Kona, 15; South Kohala, 4; Puna, 3; and Ka’u, 2.

There have been 195 major accidents so far this year compared with 199 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

So far this year, there were two traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with five during the same period last year, a decrease of 60 percent.
