UH-Hilo event to honor alumni

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Alumni and Friends Association invites the public to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of its alumni and supporters at the 12th annual Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards Banquet on Friday, Feb. 24, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Campus Center Dining Room.

Tickets are $75 per person or $600 for a table of eight.

This year’s Distinguished Alumni recipients are Gary Hara (brigadier general, Hawaii National Guard), Dennis O’Brien (principal, E.B. de Silva Elementary School), Gladys Sonomura (community volunteer) and Ross Wilson (principal, current events).

Distinguished Service honorees are Dr. Miyoko Sugano (professor emeritus) and Jimmy Yagi (basketball coach).

The event also features a silent auction to raise scholarship funds.

Elderly ID event canceled

Coordinated Services for the Elderly’s Senior ID Card meeting scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24, at Yano Hall has been canceled.

Arts student to perform

“Island Boy with City Dreams” will feature University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts senior Joshua “Baba” Tavares in an intimate night of music, dance and pure entertainment at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the East Hawaii Cultural Center.

Admission by donation.
