Four million cats and dogs are put down in U.S. shelters each year, according to the Humane Society of the United States. That means one homeless pet is euthanized about every eight seconds. More than 1,000 healthy animals are euthanized on the island of Hawaii each month.

World Spay Day takes place on Tuesday. Humane organizations and rescue groups are organizing reduced cost spay/neuter clinics. Hui Pono Holoholona is holding a yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Keaau Eagles and having a spay/neuter cat clinic for 40 cats at 9 a.m.
