Two men will stand trial for allegedly roughing up a witness to a fatal fight outside a Hilo bar.
Waylen Keone Carenio, 21, of Waimea, and his 24-year-old half-brother, Turner “Kaimana” Au of Hilo, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of kidnapping, third-degree assault, intimidating a witness and retaliating against a witness. Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara set trial for June 4 at 8:30 a.m.
Carenio and Au, who have both competed as amateur mixed martial artists, allegedly restrained and assaulted 20-year-old Clyde Lewis of Hilo inside a car outside Coqui’s Hideaway restaurant and sports bar late on the night of Feb. 1.
Lewis, 20, of Hilo, allegedly witnessed a Dec. 3 fight outside Karma Hawaii sports bar between Carenio and Roy Williams, a 44-year-old Mountain View man who died the next day in a Honolulu hospital.
Carenio is charged with manslaughter for the fatal affray. His trial in that case is set for April 2 before Hara.
Both Carenio and Au are being held without bail at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
