A homecoming also turned into an opportunity to add another golf trophy for Steve Veriato, a former Hilo resident.
Veriato, 65, is playing in the senior professional flight in the 15th annual Hilo Invitational, which runs today through Sunday at Hilo Muni
He played on the PGA Tour, Asian Tour, Candian Tour and Champions Tour, where he won the Novell Utah Showdown in 2001. That victory led to a two-year exemption for the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai Golf Club in 2003.
Veriato played on the PGA Tour from 1976 to ’80, and his best finish was second at the Atlanta Classic in 1977.
On the local level, he was a two-time Hawaii State Open champion in 1976 and ’77.
He resides in Buda, Texas.
Former UH-Hilo golfer Stephen Zane is the defending champion. He is not in the field this year.
Back in the pro flight is runner-up Nick Mason, also a former UHH golfer, as well as Jarrett Hamamoto, Kevin Hayshi, Kevin Carll and Sean Maekawa.
Golfers will play 18 holes today with tee times at 7 a.m. and noon, and the final round Sunday starts at 7 a.m.
