American Savings Bank celebrated Valentine’s Day by raising more than $200,000 through its new annual employee giving program named “Kahiau” with larger-than-life valentines signed by employees presented to participating nonprofit organizations.
In Hawaiian, kahiau means “to give from the heart without expecting anything in return.”
American President and CEO Rich Wacker presented the first check for $51,758 to Howard Garval, president of Child and Family Services, one of the participating nonprofits.
“Kahiau is the perfect description of the spirit of generosity and caring for our communities that I have seen consistently demonstrated in the actions of so many of our American teammates since my first day here,” Wacker said.
“I cannot thank American Savings Bank and its employees enough for the very generous and wonderful contributions to Child and Family Service,” said Garval. “American employees have sent a strong message of belief in the importance of what we do for children, youth, families, kupuna and the community.”

During the campaign American employee contributions combined with matching funds from the HEI Charitable Foundation totaled $204,000.
