Sheehan’s death is the fifth official traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, the same number as this time last year.

Police say a Laupahoehoe man was killed Sunday in a single-motorcycle crash on Kalanianaole Avenue near Koloa Street in Keaukaha.

He was identified as 24-year-old Dimitri I. Sheehan.

Officers responding to a 4:08 p.m. call determined that Sheehan was riding a 2002 Honda motorcycle west on Kalanianaole when he did a “wheelie,” lost control of the bike, ran off the right side of the road and struck a street sign.

Sheehan, who was wearing a helmet, was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 5:43 p.m.

Police do not yet know if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
