The University of Hawaii at Hilo was tied for 5th place after the first round of the St. Edward’s Invitational on Monday in Austin, Texas.
The two-day women’s collegiate golf tournament is being played at the Grey Rock Golf Course.
Going into today’s final round, Tarleton State players held the top three spots to lead their team to a 300 total and the first-round lead. In second place was host St. Edward’s at 319, followed by Arkansas-FortSmith at 322. UH-Hilo was tied at 325 with West Texas A&M and Newman.
“We’re only three out of third place and six out of second place,” said UH-Hilo coach Jim DeMello. “We’re making little mistakes along the way that if we take of would put us right up there.
“These golf courses we’re playing are not very long but it penalizes you for an errant shot.”
Dayna Bersamin led the Vulcans in the opening round with a 6-over-par 77. Tied for 18th place was Kristen Sawada at 9-over-par 80. At 13-over-par 84 were Nyssa Aoki and Erika Morihio, tied for 38th place, while Kacie Harada was tied for 46th place at 14-over-par 85.
Tarleton’s Sharon Lau led the field with a 1-over 72.
Completing the team field are Lubbock Christian (329) in 8th place, followed by Cameron (330), Southwest Oklahoma State (331), Cal State East Bay (340), Incarnate Word (340), Angelo State (348), St. Mary’s-Texas (353) and Henderson State (358).
