DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
During the week of Feb. 20-26, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunken driving. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 11 each; Puna, 4; and South Kohala, 2.
So far this year, there have been 230 DUI arrests compared to 228 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.9 percent.
There have been 219 major accidents so far this year compared to 229 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to five during the same period last year. There has also been one vehicular death that police don’t count toward the official total because it occurred on private property.
