UHH’s Sueda earns
PacWest accolade
University of Hawaii at Hilo senior infielder Aisha Sueda was selected the Pacific West Conference Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 13.
She helped the Vulcans start their season 5-1 during a homestand against Cal State Stanislaus. The former Hilo High multisport standout hit .500 with two doubles, a homer and nine RBIs.
Due to the number of games to start the season, the weekly PacWest Reports were delayed.
Hilo Golf Classic
to be held March 17
The Big Island Junior Golf Association will be host its 30th annual Hilo Golf Classic on March 17 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
The fundraising event will be a three-person modified scramble with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.
Entry fee is $300.00 per team and includes cart, green fee, lunch, two mulligan and two greenies. Hole sponsorship is also available and includes entry for three-person teams.
Entry forms are available at www.BIJGA.org or at the Hilo Municipal Pro Shop. Forms must be dropped off at Hilo Muni by March 14.

Eight-year-old sinks

Eight-year-old Megan Nakamoto aced the 105-yard fifth hole Feb. 20 at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf Club using a 4-hybrid.

Former Hilo softball
player to be honored
Larry Frink, a former senior softball player with the Hilo Flyers and Puu Opio, will be inducted into the Florida Polk County Senior Softball Hall of Fame on March 14.
Unable to play because of injuries, Frink currently manages the Florida state champion in the 70s’ division.
Hershey youth track
meet is March 10
Hershey’s annual track and field youth meet will be held March 10 at Konawaena High School, and the deadline to enter is Thursday.
Sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation, the event is open to keiki ages 9-14 (as of Dec. 31, 2012). An official entry form must be completed for each entrant and signed by a parent, along with a signed Parks and Recreation registration form. Both documents are available at www.hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation.
Completed forms may be faxed to the Recreation Division at 961-8736 or delivered to the office at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo by the close of business Thursday.
Boys and girls will compete in events ranging from the 50-meter dash to a 1,600 run, along with team relays, standing long jump and softball throw, and winners’ results will be compared with those from other meets held throughout Hawaii to determine state champions. The top athletes will be entered in a regional pool to become eligible for placement on a regional team that will travel to Hershey, Penn., to compete in the North American Final set for Aug. 2-5.
