A 38-year-old Kapaau man was killed Saturday in a single motorcycle crash on Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala.

He was identified as Lance C.K. Pule.

Witnesses to the midday crash told police that Pule was riding south on his 2011 Kawasaki when he overtook another vehicle at a high rate of speed in a no-passing zone, ran off the right side of the road and crashed.

Pule, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by helicopter to Kohala Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:31 p.m.

It’s not known yet if alcohol or drugs were involved; an autopsy has been ordered.

Pule’s death was the sixth official traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to five at the same time last year.
