Hawaii Preparatory Academy fought past Kohala 73-64 to claim the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II boys basketball championship on Feb. 11 at Hilo Civic. It was the first-ever BIIF basketball title and the accompanying state tournament berth for the hustling Ka Makani. Members of the D-II champion Ka Makani include seniors Dakota Berman, Tyler Van Kirk, Keanu Yamamoto, Kai Chen, Aaron Harper and Zach Greenbaum; juniors Jovan Crnic, Kama DeSilva, Sefa Rocha-Tufaga, Eigoro Akai and Juan Yarawamai; and sophomores Kalan Camero and Zane Gray. Dave Huntington and Fred Wawmer were the HPA co-head coaches during the private school’s milestone season.
