Kauai mayor declares disaster after heavy rains
LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. has declared a disaster for his county after several days of heavy rains caused roads to flood and sewage to spill.
Carvalho said in a statement Monday the declaration will allow the county access to funding and additional resources if necessary.
He’s also asked Gov. Neil Abercrombie to issue an emergency proclamation for the entire island of Kauai. Carvalho says this will help the county get help from the state and federal governments if needed.
Heavy rains caused a manhole to overflow and sewage to spill near the Wailua Wastewater Plant.
Parts of Kuhio Highway is closed, as is all of Kapaa Bypass Road.
The Garden Island newspaper reported Monday at least 12 families were evacuated because of heavy rains on Sunday.
