Honokaa’s Dylan Shiraki turned in one of the best relief outings in Big Island Interscholastic Federation history. It still wasn’t enough to rally the Dragons past Hawaii Prep Wednesday in Waimea.
Senior Jayse Bannister pitched a complete game, and HPA made a six-run first inning hold up as the Ka Makani defeated Honokaa 7-5 in the BIIF season opener for both teams.
“We definitely hopped on Jayse’s back, and he led us to victory,’’ Hawaii Prep manager Jordan Hayslip said. “It was a good team win, and we played solid defense behind him.”
Senior Kai Fink and sophomore Ian Rice each drilled two-run doubles for Ka Makani in the first inning, chasing Honokaa starter Makani Dias, who failed to record an out while taking the loss.
But Shiraki, who was accustomed to coming out of the bullpen during much of last season, kept HPA in check thereafter, giving up one run on four hits over six innings. He struck out 11 and walked two.
“Shiraki pitched a great game for Honokaa,’’ Hayslip said.
Rice finished with two doubles and three RBIs for HPA (1-0), while Bannister, senior Holden Pattengill and sophomore Mike Nakahara added two hits apiece.
Honokaa (0-1) took the lead in the first inning on junior Kazu Tolentino’s two-run triple.
Tolentino also doubled in the game, finishing with three RBIs while senior Joey Charbonneau and sophomore Austin Jardine each had two hits.

Waiakea 13, Pahoa 0: Waiakea started its Division I title defense with an exclamation point in a five-inning TKO game.
Reyn Kihara, Tyler Ishimoto and Jace Okutsu combined on a one-hitter. Kihara went three innings for the win. The senior left-hander allowed a hit and struck out seven. Ishimoto and Okutsu each fired a scoreless inning.
Kean Wong batted 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead Waiakea’s nine-hit attack. Quintin Torres-Costa had two hits and scored four runs, Kylen Uyeda was 3 for 3 with a solo homer and two RBIs, and Davy Camacho added two RBIs.
Leka Tua pitched three innings in the loss for the Division II Daggers, who will play all their games on the road due to an unplayable home field.
“I thought we played well and did the things we needed to do,” Waiakea coach Kevin Yee said. “Our pitching held up and we threw a lot of strikes. Our defense played well, and we hit the ball hard. A lot of our outs were hit right at people.
“It was a good start and we’re headed in the right direction. We’ve still got to keep working hard. There’s always room for improvement.”
Waiakea will host Keaau at 1 p.m. Saturday. Torres-Costa, who earlier signed with Hawaii, is expected to start.

Kealakehe 18, Kohala 3: Leading 5-3 after four innings, Kealakehe took advantage of nine walks by four different Cowboys pitchers to score 13 runs in the top of the fifth inning at Kamehameha Park.
The contest ended after five innings because of the league’s 10-run mercy rule.
Junior Bricen Ferreira earned the victory for the Waveriders (1-0), allowing five hits and seven walks in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out eight.
Ferreira and senior Austin Galigo each went 2-for-5 with two RBIs at the plate.
Senior Hookele Aiona suffered the loss for the Cowboys (0-1), giving up eight hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out two.
Kohala senior Kona Tagalicod went 1-for-3, driving in two runs in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly.

Keaau 16, Ka‘u 1: Jonathan Segovia batted 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Maleko Remlinger fired three scoreless inning with five strikeouts to spark the Cougars to a five-inning TKO victory.
Adrian Huff went 2 for 4 with two runs scored while Remlinger and Keha Wong added two RBIs each. Huff went the final two innings and allowed a run on two hits and two walks, and struck out one.
Rayden Esperon pitched three innings in the loss.

The Warriors have moved two of their home games — Friday, March 16 vs. Kamehameha and Wednesday, April 3 vs. Hilo — to Wong Stadium with 6 p.m. starts.
There will be a concession at both games.

Softball
Erin Martinez pitched a two-hitter as Pahoa beat visiting Kamehameha 14-2 in the opening game of the BIIF season.
Martinez had an RBI single as the Daggers erupted for 10 runs in the first inning against Warriors starter Jennifer Cameros.
In the circle, Martinez went the distance — the game ended after the top of the fifth because of the BIIF’s mercy rule — striking out six and issuing two walks. She finished 2 for 4.
Cameros walked seven batters — four in the first inning — and struck out two in four innings.
Kiani Wong had a double for Kamehameha.
