University of Hawaii at Hilo softball hurlers Jessica Pepin and Amber Waracka were too much for Dominican, the last-place team in the Pacific West Conference, on Friday, silencing the visiting team’s bats with a pair of shutouts.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Pepin fired a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Penguins, walking none and striking out four. She missed on a perfect game in the fifth inning when she struck out Jill Rizo with two out. But a swinging strikeout and wild pitch allowed Rizo to reach first. Pepin got the next hitter to ground out.

The Vulcans (8-1, 3-0 PacWest) and Penguins (2-17, 0-6) conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader at noon today at the UHH Softball Field.

Bryanna Hardy, Nicole Alconcel and Aisha Sueda each had two hits to provide offensive support for Pepin.

Jessi Saaty went the distance in the loss. She gave up six runs on nine hits and one walk, and struck out one.

In the first game, Waracka tossed a three-hitter in a 7-0 win, walking one and whiffing four.

Alconcel batted 3 for 4 and Emily Greene 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Vulcans.

Shawna Robb pitched 5 1/3 innings in the loss.
