HONOLULU (AP) — Maui-based energy consultant Michael Champley’s appointment to the Public Utilities Commission has been approved by the state Senate.
Senators from Maui offered support for Champley, who has spent more than 40 years working on public policy and technical issues involving the regulated energy industry.
Champley had been serving as a temporary commissioner since September 2011, when he was appointed by the governor. Prior to that, he worked as an consultant focused on clean energy resource integration in Hawaii.
Champley was also a senior executive at DTE Energy, a major electric and gas energy company.
Sen. Kalani English says a thorough understanding of the regulatory process from the utility perspective makes Champley highly qualified to serve on the commission.
