The Hawaiian Classical Christian Academy, a new private school that recently opened its doors in Hilo, competed against eight other teams and won the first place trophy for the middle school division at the Regional Science Olympiad tournament held in January at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.
On March 3, the team competed in the State Science Olympiad Competition on Oahuand was awarded the Spirit Award for most inspirational team. The team of seven students competed in 14 partner events.
Dakota Hill and Noa Gagner took second place in the catapult event and third in the tower event. Sierra Hill and Noa Gagner took third in optics. Ariel Patterson took fourth in the “Mission Possible” event that involved making a Rube-Goldberg chain reaction machine. Overall, the team placed seventh out of 15 teams.
“I think that the Spirit Award was the best award to get because it’s not about how many resources you have, it’s about how hard you try,” said Patterson, 14.
Kimberly Hill, who won the outstanding coach award at the Regional Tournament, said “I was in tears more than once and was inspired myself at the hard work and effort the students put into their events. They were so positive and encouraging and really put their best out there and it was noticed.”
