Friendly dog in need of a family

Friendly dog in need of a family

This is Honey, a very mellow and sweet 3-year-old female. She is very easy-going and easy to have around, and she is cat friendly.

Tasha Ohana Animal Sanctuary is home for more than 70 dogs, 200 cats and six trained pigs. Located on the Big Island of Hawaii in the outskirts of Hilo, it has been in operation since 2002. The shelter, co-founded by Laurie Lannan and her mother, Amy Lannan, operates on donations from the community and its founders.

The animals come to the sanctuary when no other options are available except euthanasia. When possible, adoption homes are found, but if not, no animal is put down unless it is sick or has a poor quality of life.

Tasha Ohana is always in need of donations for food, vet bills and supplies. Donations are tax deductible. To visit the sanctuary to meet a dog or cat, call Laurie at 959-4534.

Email Pay Pal donations to: Tashaohana@yahoo.com, or send checks to: Tasha Ohana, 374 Alaloa Road, Hilo, HI 96720

Wine tasting set for Saturday

The Hilo Woman’s Club is celebrating its 91st year of community service with a wine and cheese tasting event from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the HWC Clubhouse, 7 Lele St. in Hilo. For many years in its history, the wine and cheese tasting event was very popular but was discontinued for a number of years.

Tickets are $20 and all proceeds are used to award scholarships and community donations.

For more information, call 935-9838.

Woman’s Club offers scholarships

The Hilo Woman’s Club has awarded scholarships since 1953. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are available to East Hawaii students who are currently an East Hawaii high school senior, a graduate of an East Hawaii high school, or enrolled at the Hawaii Community College or the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Last year was a milestone with the first male recipient.

Academic achievement, extra curricular activities, community service, financial need, and personal letters and recommendations are considered for the awards. Applications are available at East Hawaii high school counselors’ offices and the UHH financial aid office. The deadline for 2012-2013 scholarships is April 15, 2012. For more information, call Lisa Nelms at 935-9838.
