Dixie State University erupted for 24 runs on 29 hits to sweep a PacWest twinbill from the visiting University of Hawaii at Hilo on Sunday.

The Red Storm won the opener 10-4 and then took the second game 14-1 in St. George, Utah.

The NCAA Division II college baseball teams play a doubleheader at 10 a.m. today.

With Sunday’s sweep in mid-40 degree weather, the host Red Storm improved to 14-6 overall and 10-4 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 4-19 and 1-13, respectively, and saw their losing streak reach 13 games.

“It was really cold, in the 40s and our pitchers struggled,” UHH coach Joey Estrella said. “Hopefully tomorrow (today) it’ll warm up a little more, although rain and snow have been predicted.”

In the opener, Jordan Murai, Joshua Wong and Austin Cusack each had two hits for the Vulcans.

In Game 2, no one paired hits as Dixie State’s pitching held the visitors in check, limiting them to three hits while the Red Storm had 16 hits.
