Big Island Toyota submitted the only bid for five plug-in hybrid vehicles for use by Hawaii County.
The company submitted the bids for five Chevrolet Volt sedans, which, including a seven-year warranty and maintenance plan, would cost $234,536.05.
Each of the vehicles, plus the service plan, would cost $46,907.21, according to information provided by the county Department of Finance. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $39,145.
The vehicles use a rechargeable battery that allows the vehicle to drive gas-free for 35 miles, and a small onboard gas generator good for 375 more miles before refueling.
The county also solicited bids for one electric-only vehicle, but no companies submitted bids.
Vehicles will be based at the West Hawaii Civic Center, where plug-in electric chargers, powered by rooftop photovoltaic cells, have been installed. The cars are being purchased with $111,863 from the Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program.
