SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say a Connecticut man accidentally dialed 911 from his cellphone while stealing about 700 pounds of scrap metals.
Police say the 46-year-old man was arrested after the robbery from a Southington merchant.
WFSB-TV reports he was charged Thursday with third-degree criminal trespassing and sixth-degree larceny. He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court April 2.
Man tries to climb NY Times tower
NEW YORK (AP) — A man described by police as emotionally disturbed is being evaluated after he tried to climb The New York Times’ 52-story headquarters in Times Square, then said he wanted a copy of the newspaper.
The unidentified man began scaling the building at around 7 a.m. Saturday. A police spokesman says the man got as far as the fifth floor, then came back down when officers told him to descend. He was not injured but was taken to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
The New York Post reports that the man said he climbed the building because he was looking for a copy of the newspaper.
Three men climbed the building’s ladder-like façade in separate incidents in 2008. Two made it to the roof and one got to the 11th floor.
Queen drops in on wedding ceremony
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has become a wedding crasher.
The monarch dropped in moments after the nuptials of John and Frances Canning at Manchester Town Hall in northern England on Friday.
The newlyweds said Saturday the queen chatted and posed for wedding photographs. The queen and her husband Prince Philip were visiting the venue for lunch as the wedding took place.
The 44-year-old bride was impressed the queen addressed them by their first names.
