Freshman left-hander Ashley Nelson fired a four-hitter and the University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team made the most of three hits to topple Cal Baptist 4-1, splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Riverside, Calif., to complete the Pacific West Conference series.
Nelson (4-0) walked two and struck out six for the complete-game victory.
UHH scored two runs in the first, an unearned run on a double steal attempt and throwing error, and Brittany Spencer’s RBI double.
The Vuls added a run in the fifth on Nicole Alconcel’s RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth and another in the sixth on Gerika Pantohan’s run-scoring single.
Emma Holden (12-3) went the distance in the loss. She allowed four runs on three hits and five walks and struck out six.
No one paired hits for either team.
In the second game, Tory Ferreira fired a four-hitter in Cal Baptist’s 2-0 victory. Ferreira (12-2) walked one and struck out seven.
Amber Waracka (7-3) went the distance in the loss. She allowed two runs on three hits and two walks, and whiffed seven.
Angeline Cruz batted 2 for 2 to lead the Vulcans (14-7, 9-6).
Lindsay Henry and Sloan McHann hit solo homers for the Lancers (24-5, 10-4).
