The community is invited to a grand opening night for Kupukupu, a new Puna community resource center in Pahoa, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Enjoy an evening of music, dance and poetry.

On Monday, April 2, Kupukupu will begin to offer classes for youth and adults in the performing arts, healing arts and earth arts. Kupu means “grow” and kupukupu is the first fern to grow in a new lava flow.

“The intention of the center is to support the growth of individuals and of our community,” said spokeswoman Christy Ceraso.

Kupukupu is located in downtown Pahoa behind Lola’s Bowtiki, across from Kaleo’s.

The after-school youth classes will be: Beginning Breakdancing, Youth Choir, Capoeira Angola, Hip Hop, Hip Hop Yoga, TranZendance, DaAinaMite Dancers, Yoga for Keiki and Caregivers.

There are also many bi-weekly, weekly and monthly classes for adults to choose from, including yoga, dance, writing, nonviolent communication, mindful living and stress reduction.

Everyone is invited to come by the studio to meet teachers, get an updated monthly schedule, sign up for classes or just have a look around during this week’s Kupukupu Open House Week.
