Guitarist/vocalist David Bromberg, “a master practitioner of folk, blues, bluegrass and other musical genres,” will perform on Sunday at the Palace Theater in Hilo.
The David Bromberg Trio consists of Bromberg, Mark Cosgrove (guitar/mandolin/vocals) and Nate Grower (fiddle/mandolin/vocals).
Bromberg, known as a “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, has played on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan, Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, George Harrison, Jorma Kaukonen and Carly Simon.
Bromberg is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. His style is described as eclectic, and he performs bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz, country and western and rock and roll. He is known for his quirky, humorous lyrics and the ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time.
In 2008, he was nominated for a Grammy Award. Years after he left Columbia University, where he majored in music, David Bromberg graduated from sideman status on his Columbia Records debut. Bromberg has paid his dues, playing guitar on Jerry Jeff Walker’s single “Mr. Bojangles,” among dozens of other recording sessions and gigs as a backup musician. Notably, he played on Bob Dylan’s “Self Portrait” and “New Morning” albums.
Tickets for the Palace Theater concert are available at the theater box office (808-934-7010), CD Wizard and Hilo Music Exchange. Tickets range from $28 to $45. Doors open at 6 p.m.; concert starts at 7 p.m.
