Everyone is invited to the second annual Easter Sunrise Service in Hakalau, hosted by World Botanical Gardens at its spectacular Kamae‘e Falls overlook at 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 8. The free, informal 45-minute service will be led by the Rev. Linda Petrucelli, pastor of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ in Honomu.
“With the sound and view of the falls on one side, those gathered will pray, sing and worship as we watch the sun rise over the Pacific,” said Petrucelli. “Beneath a canopy, the service will be held rain or shine, commemorating the miracle of the empty tomb and Christ’s resurrection.” Bring an umbrella and a jacket for comfort.
When guests arrive, they will be directed to a parking area at the World Botanical Garden. From there a van will shuttle them to the service site, which is accessible to all.
To reach World Botanical Gardens from Hilo, drive northwest on Highway 19. After the Hakalau valley bridge and prior to the 16-mile marker is a sign marking the gardens. Turn left and follow the signs to the designated parking area. Volunteers will be there to direct you to the shuttle van.
Hilo Coast United Church of Christ will hold its traditional Easter service at 10 a.m. that day in Honomu, with Easter treats for the children and refreshments for everyone. The church is located 15 minutes north of Hilo at 28-1630 Old Mamalahoa Highway. For more information, contact Petrucelli at 963-6330, or visit http://www.wbgi.com and http://hilocoastucc.org.
