Forgetful, or have a loved one who is?
The Alzheimer’s Association will offer kokua to the community on three Saturdays in April at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo at 1055 Kinoole St. Chris Ridley, the association’s East Hawaii administrator, will be presenting six lectures and three movies, and will facilitate support groups for forgetful people and their caregivers.
On April 7, 14 and 21, there will be a 1 p.m. series on What Is Dementia, Legal Affairs in Dementia and Challenging Behaviors in Dementia. A 3 p.m. series of movies will include “A Time to Remember‚” “The Savages” and “I Am Not Fictional.” There will be a three-part series at 5 p.m. called Living With Forgetfulness. This is geared toward anyone who is forgetful and their family members.
The program on April 7 will begin with a workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. This 1 p.m. presentation includes short videos of persons with the disease, family members of persons with dementia and various professionals. The movie “A Time To Remember” will be shown at 3 p.m. This 2003 made-for-television film focuses on a family reunion at Thanksgiving. The centerpiece of the drama is the character of Maggie (Doris Roberts), who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will begin the first of its three-part series on Living with Alzheimer’s. Attendees do not need to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
On April 14, the topic will be Legal Aspects in Dementia. This 1 p.m. workshop covers information on advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies. The movie “Savages” will be shown at 3 p.m. It stars Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as siblings caring for a father with dementia. At 5 p.m., Ridley will present part two of Living with Alzheimer’s.
On April 21, the topic will be Challenging Behaviors in Dementia. This workshop covers information on types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia. The movie “I Am Not Fictional” will be shown at 3 p.m. For reservations, please call 443-7360.
