Japan consulate honors elder

Life Care Center of Hilo elder Kikue Tanaka was recently honored by Honolulu Consulate General of Japan Masanori Shindori on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

Born in Yamaguchi, Japan, Tanaka worked as a typesetter for the Hilo Times and Hawaii Hochi newspapers. Throughout her many years, she has enjoyed gardening, writing and playing basketball.

Her three daughters — Noriko Fujii, Kyoko Tsuchida and Fumie Ito — and Masafumi Honda, president of the Hawaii Japanese Center in Hilo, were among the well-wishers present for the big occasion.
