John Ellis Basham III, 62, of Hilo died Saturday, March 24, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Topeka, Kansas. No services. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society. Survived by mother, Jessie Basham of Topeka, Kansas; brother, Richard Basham of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Barbara Basham of Koloa, Kauai.

Charles Connor Cowpland, 84, of Papaikou died Saturday, March 31, at his residence. Born in Dallas, Texas, he was commercial fisher and the captain of “Finest Kind” boat. He was a member of the Hilo Trollers and a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. Private services. Contributions can be made to Hospice of Hilo. Survived by spouse, Donna Cowpland of Papaikou; daugthers, Grace (Rex) Sulsberger of Morrill, Neb., and Gail (Jerryl Mauhili) Cowpland of Papaikou; son, Scott Cowpland of Key West, Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Kazue “Kay” Fujii, 83, of Honolulu, formerly of Hilo, died March 13, at Hale Ola Kino in Honolulu. Born in Hilo, she was formerly a nurse with Dr. Ruben Casile’s office in Hilo. Private services held. Survived by husband, Richard N. Fujii of Kaneohe, Oahu; daughters, Evelyn (Layne) Machida of Aiea, Oahu, Donna (Joel) Tanabe of Hilo; hanai daughter, Joanne (Eugene) Yamada of Mililani, Oahu; brothers, Norio (Rosey) Harada, Bunichi (Hideyo) Harada, both of Hilo; sisters, Asayo Naguwa of Hilo, Martha (Hubei) Kaji of Torrance, Calif., June (Albert) Nakagawa of Pearl City, Oahu; brothers-in-law, Akira Fukuchi of Hilo, Hiroshi (Gina) Fujii of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters-in-law, Mary Harada, Emiko (Naoto) Katada, both of Hilo, Suemi (Kelly) Tamaoka of Honolulu; three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
