Jonny Chow, a 2011 Keaau graduate, batted a combined 3 for 8 with two RBIs and four runs scored to spark Whitman College over Lewis & Clark 7-5 and 11-2 in a Northwest Conference baseball game Sunday.
Chow is a freshman center fielder for Whitman (4-23, 4-11), a Division III school in Walla, Walla, Wash. He is batting .239 (16 of 67) and has played in 20 games.
Water polo
• Kanoe Lyons (’07 Kamehameha), a freshman driver for Notre Dame College, a Division II school in Ohio, was named ESPN Cleveland Falcons of the Week for games from March 18-25.
She scored eight goals, added five assists and 16 steals and drew 12 exclusions or fouls for the Falcons in four games during the week for the Falcons (3-11).
Lyons scored a goal, had five steals and two exclusions drawn against No. 10 Michigan. She did the same thing against Gannon, except she had five exclusions. Then she had three goals and an assist against No. 15 Indiana.
Against Salem International, she recorded a program record four assists in the Falcons’ record-breaking 19-5 win. She also had game-highs with three goals and five steals.
Lyons, a first-year member of NDC, leads the team with 26 goals, 12 assists, 44 steals and 36 exclusions drawn, which means an opposing player remains in the penalty area for 20 seconds.
Golf
• Tamara Surtees (’08 Hawaii Prep), a senior at Santa Clara, is second on the team in scoring average at 77.7 strokes per round. Her best finish this season was fourth at the Santa Clara Colby Invitational, held last October. She won that tourney as a junior, her only medalist victory.
She has one more meet, the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, before the West Coast Conference Championship, from April 16-17, her last collegiate start.
Last season at the WCC Championship, Surtees was 14th. She was an all-conference honorable mention. As a sophomore, she placed 10th and was named to the first team. As a freshman, she tied for 13th and was named honorable mention.
• Britney Yada (’09 Waiakea), a junior at Division I Portland State, has one more meet before the Big Sky Conference Championship. She is the defending champion and shot a record 6-under 72-68-70—210 last season. She was third as a freshman. The two-time all-conference, first-team member already holds the school season scoring average of 75.5 set last season, and career scoring average of 76.1.
Her best finish this season is fourth during the Gonzaga Invitational held last September. The Vikings have won the last two Big Sky Conference Championship titles.
Gymnastics
• Tiana Montrell (’11 St. Joseph), a UC Davis freshman, won the all-around title with a career-high score of 38.275 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships March 24. The NCAA regional will be held April 7 in Seattle.
She competed for Pantheon School of Gymnastics for 13 years, and reached the Junior Olympic Nationals in 2008, ’10 and last year. Montrell was also a National Honor Society student at St. Joe.
