A battle of Big Island Interscholastic Federation water polo unbeatens wasn’t a battle for long.
Kiana Krzyska and Sydney Plunkett each scored eight goals Wednesday at Naeole Pool in Keaau to lift Kamehameha to a 21-3 victory against Hawaii Prep.
Seeking their third consecutive undefeated BIIF season, the Warriors (6-0) have outscored their opponents 106-33. Krzyska, a senior attacker, already has accounted for a league-best 38 goals. Plunkett, who along with Krzyska and the rest of the starters only played about half of Wednesday’s match, now has 29 from her 2-meter position.
Not only are the Warriors dominating, but coach Dan Lyons says his team continues to respond positively to new challenges as it “works on things” that he hopes will make it more successful should it qualify for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament.
“We played good pressure defense and attacked the perimeter,” Lyons said. “Everybody played, and I don’t notice much of a difference between the first and second teams.”
Paula Imoto tallied a hat trick and Acacia Trusdell and Cassidy Fratinardo each added goals for the Warriors, who can wrap up the BIIF regular-season title and a state berth with victories against the Ka Makani and Waiakea on April 14 at home.
Bhillie Luciani, Hannah Twigg-Smith and Anu Nihipali scored for the Ka Makani (4-1), who fell into a second-place tie with Waiakea. Those two teams meet for the first time this season April 11 in Waimea.
A second state berth will be available when the Nos. 2-3 seeds meet at the BIIF semifinals April 27 at Naeole Pool.
