Jose “Joe” Cabison Sr., 81, of Hilo and formerly of Papaikou died at home on Friday, March 23. Born in Mokuleia, Waialua, Oahu, he was a retired construction worker, veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Local 368. Friends may call at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou on Friday from 9-10:30 a.m., where a Mass will be held at 11 a.m., followed by burial at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2. The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted. Survived by sons, Jose Cabison Jr. of Hilo, Russell G. Cabison of Hilo, and Lance (Emma) Cabison of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Santos Cabison Sr. of Hilo, and Ramon (Julie) Cabison Sr. of Hilo; sisters, Lorrain (Pete) Rivera of Waipahu, Oahu, and Rose (Rudy) Costales of Waipahu, Oahu; sister-in-law, Lani Cabison of Waianae, Oahu; granddaughter, Shayci Cabison-Kaleo of Hilo; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dr. Brent Sherman Gallagher, 72, of Honohina died at the Hilo Medical Center on Friday, April 6. Born in Massachusetts he was a retired professor of oceanography at the University of Hawaii (Manoa and Hilo). Friends may call at the Coconut Island pavilion on Friday at 4 p.m. for a celebration of life. Casual attire. Survived by wife, Gina Gallagher of Honohina; son, Brian Gallagher of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Dawn Sylwin of Seattle; hanai daughter, Christina Chatfield of Hayden, Idaho; brother, David Gallagher of Two Rivers, Wisc.; sister, Stella Cordes of Oakland, Calif.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Toshiko Muranaka, 89, of Keaau died March 17 at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Keaukaha, she was a retired cook employed by the former Sheraton Hotel in Hilo. She was a member of the Hilo Hooganji Mission, Honomu Henjoji (Odaishisan) Mission, and the Hilo Daijingu Church. Private services held. No flowers. No koden. Survived by sons, Melvin (Sharon) Muranaka of Keaau and Wallace (Yong) Muranaka of Hilo; sister, Chieko “Ann” (Takashi) Maki of Monterey Park, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Tsuyako Okamura of Yamaguchi, Japan, and Misako Okamura of Hilo; five grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Liza Villa Namau’u, 43, of Hilo died at home on Monday, April 2. Born in the Philippines, she was a buyer with THY and Associates. Masashi Wagatsuma, 96, of Papaikou died March 16 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Papaikou he retired as an independent sugar cane planter and farmer. He was a member of the Hilo Coast United Church of Christ. Private service held. Survived by sons, Samuel Wagatsuma of Honolulu, Albert Wagatsuma of Papaikou; daughter, Jane (Jerry) Hamamoto of Hilo; one grandchild. Arrangements by Borthwick Hawaii Funeral Home, Hilo.
