The annual Dennis Aguiar Portuguese Day In the Park will be presented from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, at Gilbert Carvalho Park at 850 Waianuenue Ave. in Hilo.

“This event is sponsored by the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce each year to celebrate all things Portuguese,” said spokeswoman Margo Aguiar.

Members of the chamber will start the day making Portuguese bean soup at the park and will demonstrate the baking of bread in the forno, the Portuguese stone oven. Free fresh soup and bread samples will be served at noon to those in attendance.

Fresh and delicious malasadas made by the Portuguese Culture Club will be available for purchase. Other Portuguese food items also will be sold. These include cebolas (Portuguese pickled onions), linguisa (homemade Portuguese sausage) and pao doce, or sweet bread.

“Come for lunch and Portuguese sausage hot dogs and beverages in our concession booth,” said Aguiar. “Listen to the Hawaii County Band in a special concert, including Portuguese music selections, beginning at 11 a.m. Visit our genealogy booth and learn how to trace your Portuguese heritage. Bring your family and friends to enjoy all things Portuguese.”
