Writers from around the globe are invited to Volcano Art Center’s 14th annual Weekend Writer’s Retreat — Writing for Power, Heart and Vision — at the end of the month.

Writers from around the globe are invited to Volcano Art Center’s 14th annual Weekend Writer’s Retreat — Writing for Power, Heart and Vision — at the end of the month.

Volcano writer Tom Peek will once again guide an intimate group through a focused weekend of writing, sharing and personal growth beginning Friday, April 27.

“Exploration of the personal writing process is as powerful and essential as the writing itself,” said Peek. “We work on identifying and overcoming all the barriers that limit our creative vision and impede our writing in a supportive and peaceful setting.”

Peek has been teaching his popular writing workshops since 1991 through the Volcano Art Center, the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the Lanai Arts and Culture Center. He has written for more than 30 years, both professionally and as a potent way to process and guide the experiences of his life.

Peek said the workshop is designed to help writers in all stages and genres to improve the emotion, depth and potency of their work. Students are led through a series of writing exercises, group discussions and stimulating sessions to help “free the writer within,” he said.

“This retreat delivers a thought-provoking weekend of intensive writing and self-exploration,” said Volcano Art Center CEO Tanya Aynessazian. “While writers come expecting to be challenged, what they don’t expect are the deep friendships they forge throughout the experience. They find it hard to say goodbye.”

The venue for the three-day event will be Volcano Hale in Volcano Village. Cost is $280, with six meals and supplies included. The retreat is restricted to 14 students. A limited number of private rooms at Volcano Hale are available at a discounted rate of $150 for two nights. Financial aid applications are due by April 14.
