Activities at the Honomu Gym include a 5-on-5 intermediate-age basketball tournament, fishing pole casting contest with prizes, speedball throw (radar monitors how fast you pitch the ball), zumba and yoga demonstrations encouraging audience participation, bouncing castle, water slide, kids crafts a concession with ono grinds, shave ice and cotton candy. Bring your extra clothes and towels and your yoga mats (not to worry, don’t have a mat? They have some!).
The massive rummage sale is the mother of all rummage sales! It starts at 7 a.m. sharp, no earlies! Follow the signs to the Hilo Coast United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall at the end of the road for bargains that will keep your wallets and family happy. Donations are still being accepted. Call the Honomu Gym at 963-5302. Items can be dropped off at the gym between 12:30 and 7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
This event supports and assists with the recreational community programs and activities at the Honomu Gym, and is co-sponsored by the Rural South Hilo Community Association and the county Department of Parks and Recreation.

Today (Sunday April 15) is the annual Hamakua Lions Club Chuckwagon Breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. at the Honokaa High School cafeteria. Come on down for a grand plate of barbecue meat, pancakes, hot dog, eggs and papaya. Take-out is available. Please plan to donate $5. The yearly fundraiser benefits the Lions Club International Foundation, Hawaii Lions Foundation, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other Lions community projects. Mahalo from the Hamakua Lions Club.

In honor of National Jazz Appreciation month, the award-winning Honokaa High School Jazz Band will head to Oahu for its “Big City Tour” April 19-22. The 30-member band, under the direction of musical director Gary Washburn, has a jam-packed schedule performing at the USS Battleship Missouri Memorial, Ala Moana Center Stage, Arcadia, YMCA Healthy Kids Day at the Bishop Museum, Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki, and at Sea Life Park.
The Jazz Band will also appear on Hawaii News Now this Friday morning with Howard Dicus before they jazz it up at the State Capitol Rotunda. The band members will be recognized for their achievements by Rep. Mark Nakashima and Sen. Malama Solomon in their respective chambers of the State Legislature.
This year, the band shows off a repertoire from the 1940s to the present, including music from artists, Paul Simon, Michael Buble, Etta James, Ruth Brown, Brazil 66, Christina Aguilera, Maceo Parker and Aretha Franklin, as well as a special Cuban song, “Mis Dos Pequenas.”
Hawaiian Airlines will feature the Honokaa Jazz Band in the June edition of its “Hana Hou” Magazine.

Come on Saturday, April 21, from 4 p.m. until pau for the first Ma Hula Pauloa — Earth Day Hula Festival and Hula Competition. Ma Hula Pauloa roughly translates to “Hula Lives Through us all.” The Hamakua Youth Center is spearheading an effort to bring the hula community together by opening this hula competition to all those who practice the art of hula through halau, church groups, school, youth center and luau production shows.
This unique competition gives all people an equal opportunity to share with the community what they have been taught and have learned throughout their journey of helping perpetuate Hawaiian culture. Each soloist is required to perform a kahiko and auana number, except for kupuna, who will perform auana, or modern, hula numbers.
Tickets are available from the Hamakua Youth Center, members of its board of directors and at these outlets: Hamakua Youth Center, Jolene’s Kaukau Korner, Waipio, Waimea Coffee Co., Waimea Music Exchange and at the Friday Malama Market. Ticket prices are as follows: adults $20, kids 17 and under $10$, lap kids 5 and under, free.
