During the week of April 8-15, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under age 21.
So far this year, there have been 419 DUI arrests compared with 398 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Puna, 2; Ka‘u, 1; and Kona, 11.
There have been 432 major accidents so far this year compared with 411 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.1 percent.
So far this year, there were 11 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 37.5 percent.
To date, two fatalities were related to drugs.DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
