The Kona Historical Society will host its next KHS Jeep Trip to the Pahala Sugar Plantation house in Ka‘u on Saturday, May 19. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost will be $65, with membership in the nonprofit organization.
“Highlights of this trip will be the history of the towns of Pahala — an old sugar plantation town where sugar cane was raised from the 1800s until 1996,” said a KHS spokesman. (The word Pahala means the ash residue left from burning hala leaves). And the tour will include Naalehu, aka the “southernmost community in the U.S.A.”
Panoramic views of the southern part of the Big Island will also be a must-see. Participants will check in at 8:30 a.m. for the start of the trip in the parking lot next to the Naalehu Theatre and end at Honuapo/Whittington State Park at 4 p.m. A buffet lunch will be provided by Aikane Plantation.
