During the week of April 16-22, 2012, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
So far this year, there have been 441 DUI arrests compared to 424 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 8; South Hilo, 6; Puna, 5; and South Kohala, 3.
There have been 460 major accidents so far this year compared to 434 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 37.5 percent.
To date, three fatalities have been related to drugs with none related to alcohol or a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
