A 40-year-old Hilo man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a drug charge that stemmed from a traffic stop.

Hilo Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura handed down the sentence on April 18 to John Kaua, who, in a deal with prosecutors, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted methamphetamine trafficking.

Police stopped Kaua on Nov. 18 for failing to stop at a traffic signal at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Mohouli Street. After obtaining a search warrant for Kaua’s vehicle, officers found numerous packets of “ice” totaling 6.9 grams, plus 12 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and other drug paraphernalia.
