Sculptor William P. Mcknight will show his work throughout May at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo. The show begins with a reception for the artist in attendance from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4.
Mcknight has been sculpting and showing for more than 37 years. Having trained in the south of France with master Italian and Japanese sculptors in the traditional method and style, Mcknight has combined tradition with free-flowing process.
“The rock speaks,” said the sculptor, who allows the stone to dictate what it wants to become.
His current work varies from ethereal womanly forms to modernist abstractions. The show will range from total abstraction to realism and will be curated to include new and past work.
Mcknight uses island stones as well as rock from other places, including granite. Some pieces are suitable for exterior applications while others can adorn any home. His work has been shown in Europe and New York.
Mcknight is also currently working on a sculpture, in basalt, of Father Damien. The traditional full body sculpture will stand larger than life at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pahoa, Damien’s first parish.
There will be an unveiling and event associated with its completion in the near future.
