Waiakea senior Chad Suzuki surged into the lead at the Big Island Interscholastic Federation golf championships, firing a 3-over 75 on Tuesday during the second round at The Club at Hokulia.
Suzuki, the defending champion, takes a four-shot advantage into Thursday’s final round at 148 after first-round leader Andrew Paisley of Hawaii Prep slumped to an 83.
Meanwhile, Waiakea sophomore Andi Igawa added a shot to her advantage with a 4-over 77. Igawa (150), who opened with a 73 on Sunday at Hualalai, leads teammate Ciera Min (78) by four strokes. Min, a junior, was the only golfer within 12 stokes of Igawa. The Warriors’ Megan Kimura (85) was 13 shots back, while Kamehameha’s Kiana Lumanlan (167) and Waiakea’s Nani Yanagi (168) rounded out the top five.
The boys leaderboard will be a bit tighter when the final round tees off at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mauna Kea Beach Resort.
Suzuki’s round was the best of the day, followed closely by Konawaena’s Ryley Chong (76), who is six shots behind in third.
Paisley, a two-time BIIF runner-up, must make up four shots, the same advantage he took into Tuesday’s round after opening with a 69.
In all, five golfers are within eight shots of the lead, including Waiakea’s Kris Ishibashi (78-155), HPA’s Jake Siebert (78-156) and Konawaena’s Ho’eu’eu Greenwell (77-156).
