Waikiki beach restoration project nearly finished
HONOLULU (AP) — A project to widen a chronically eroding section of Waikiki beach by pumping in sand from offshore is nearly finished.
TSand recovery and truck hauling operations finished as of Wednesday.
State Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman Deborah Ward says workers will remove small rocks in the sand for about a week. A contractor will remove equipment and take down a dewatering basin it created.
The department paid more than half the $2.3 million cost. The Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kyo-ya Hotels and Resorts, which owns, the Moana Surfrider and other Waikiki hotels, each contributed $500,000.
The project replenished sand to a one-third mile stretch of Waikiki from the Kuhio Beach swim basin near the Duke Kahanamoku statue to the Royal Hawaiian groin.
