Unbeaten Waiakea has been seeded third in this week’s state high school Division I baseball championships on Oahu.
The 12-team event runs Tuesday through Friday at Les Murakami Stadium and Iolani School.
Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kailua (14-1) has been awarded the No. 1 seed, followed by Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Mid-Pacific (15-2), the No. 2 seed; Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (17-0), the No. 3 seed; and Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin (13-1), the No. 4 seed.
The top four seeds draw first-round byes.
In opening-round play Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium, it’s Moanalua (OIA No. 2, 11-4) vs. Castle (OIA No. 5, 10-6) at 11 a.m.; Punahou (ILH No. 3, 13-3) vs. Hilo (BIIF No. 2, 13-5) at 5 p.m. and Kamehameha-Kapalama (ILH No. 2, 14-3) vs. Kaiser (OIA No. 4, 10-6) at 7:30 p.m. At Iolani School, Pearl City (OIA No. 3, 9-6) faces Maui High (MIL No. 2, 8-6) at 3:30 p.m.
In quarterfinal action Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium, it’s Waiakea vs. the Moanalua/Castle winner at 11:30 a.m.; Mid-Pacific vs. the Pearl City/Maui High winner at 5 p.m.; and Kailua vs. the Punahou/Hilo winner at 7:30 p.m. At Iolani School, Baldwin meets the Kamehameha-Kapalama/Kaiser winner at 3:30 p.m.
The semifinals will be played at 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium, with the championship contest at 7 p.m. Friday at the same site.
Hilo, under coach Eugene “Buzzy” Capellas, captured the BIIF’s only state title in 1985. The Vikings edged Roosevelt 11-10 for the crown at Aloha Stadium.
The state tournament started in 1959 and both Hilo and Waiakea have finished runner-up on a handful of occasions.
Division II
Waimea has been awarded the No. 1 seed in the state high school Division II baseball championships this week.
The eight-team event will be played Wednesday through Friday at Hans L’Orange Field and Les Murakami Stadium.
Kauai High, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion, is followed in the seedings by OIA champion Waipahu (12-0) at No. 2, MIL champion Seabury Hall (7-1) at No. 3 and BIIF champion Kamehameha (12-5) at No. 4.
In first-round games Wednesday at Hans L’Orange Field, it’s Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. Kalaheo (OIA No. 2, 9-3) at 10 a.m.; Seabury Hall vs. Maryknoll (ILH champion, 7-8-1) at 1 p.m.; Waimea (8-5) vs. Waialua (OIA No. 3, 7-6) at 4 p.m. and Waipahu vs. Konawaena (BIIF No. 2, 12-2) at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, the semifinals will be played at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. The D-II final will be 4 p.m. Friday at the same site.
The state D-II tournament started in 2008 and no BIIF team has captured the title yet. Kamehameha-Hawaii was the runner-up in 2010, falling to Waimea 11-10 in the final.
