The Volcano Village Artists Hui and artist John Matsushita opened their exhibits at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center Friday evening (May 4) to a very large welcoming crowd. The evening began with the introduction of the artists followed by lively entertainment provided by saxophonist Jean-Pierre Thoma and pianist Annu Shionoya. Light refreshments were served while the crowd enjoyed the art.

Light refreshments were served while the crowd enjoyed the art.

The Main Gallery is hosting “Edges,” the title challenge for the multi-media exhibit by members of the art hui. Included are prints, pottery and shibori by Lisa Louise Adams, large prints by Margaret Barnaby, fiber art by Pam Barton, wearable textile art by Cynee Gillette-Wenner, photography by Mary Goodrich, pottery by Emily Herb, mixed media ceramics by Zeke Israel, mixed media metal work by Elizabeth Miller, glass installations by Michael and Misato Mortara, mixed media paintings by Ira Ono, mixed media paintings by Randy Takaki, mixed media paintings by Debra Serrao and pottery by Erik Wold.

Matsushita, an artist also living in Volcano, has his exhibit in the Fountain Gallery.

He is known for his encaustic paintings and sculpture. Both exhibits will be on display until May 31.

Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center is a facility of the Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources.

It is free and opened to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 4:30 p.m.
