HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii public school teachers union has re-elected Wil Okabe to a second three-year term as president.
The Hawaii State Teachers Association said in a news release its board certified the election results Tuesday night.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/JdRBDV ) reported Okabe won 52 percent of the vote while his challenger, Konawaena High School math teacher Paul Daughtery, won 48 percent.
Only 22 percent of the union’s roughly 13,000 members cast ballots. Members could either mail ballots or vote online.
Union leaders including Okabe and Daughtery last week moved to have members vote again on contract they rejected by a 2-to-1 margin in January.
Okabe says the contract is the best offer members will get and will allow the union to help shape a teacher evaluation system the state is developing.
