At 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, the Palace Theater in downtown Hilo will be presenting a special free screening of local filmmaker Linda Kane’s new documentary about the life and legacy of Aunty Nona Beamer.
This special free screening of “Nona Beamer: A Legacy of Aloha” is sponsored by the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and made possible through the generosity of the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Hawaii.
Special introductions by Kaliko Beamer Trapp and Leilehua Yuen will kick off the event. Filmmaker Linda Kane will also be there to answer questions about her film.
The feature-length documentary offers a portrait of Beamer as told by some of the people whose lives were influenced by her. Through stories, songs and hula — along with archival photos and clips — a picture emerges of an amazing woman shaped by a turbulent time in Hawaii’s history.
The film features Gordean Bailey, Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, Puna Kalama Dawson, David Kawika Eyre, Nathan Kalama, Caren Loebel-Fried, Jerry Santos, Kaleo Trinidad, Penny Vredenburg and many others.
Beamer was once asked, “With all the things that you have done, how would you define yourself?” She answered, “Darling, first and foremost, I am a mother!”
In celebration of all the mothers in our community, please come and enjoy this special free screening.
The doors open at 2 p.m., and the show starts at 3 p.m.
